International Evaluation of IBCB Organized by Chinese Academy of Sciences

A seven - member panel, headed by Professor Xiaofan WANG, just finished its evaluation of the Institute of Biochemistry and Cell Biology (IBCB) under the Shanghai Institutes for Biological Sciences, Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) in December. The work submitted for review by the Director and 30 Principal Investigators of IBCB was highly praised by the review panel.
 
The evaluation panel, made up of a broad spectrum of internationally recognized experts in the life sciences, was headed by Professor Xiaofan Wang from Duke University. The evaluation shed light on the quality of research performed and its significance for the scientific field concerned, in a national and international perspective and in relation to the direction of future research.
 
The International Evaluation began in the morning on the 7th December with a welcome speech given by Dr. Lin Li, the Director of IBCB and an introduction of the institution elucidated by Dr. Naihe Jing, the Deputy Director of IBCB. In the following 2 days, 30 Principal Investigators from IBCB reported their scientific achievements and future research objectives. Afterwards, the panel held meetings with Directors of IBCB to discuss their concerns on the evaluation.
 
The evaluation panel was unanimous in its conclusion that the scientific performance for IBCB was strong, representing international standards, and they were highly impressed by both the operating mechanism and the scientific productivity of IBCB, which they believed to be the best of all the research institutions in the biochemistry and cell biology field they knew across China.
 
From an international point of view, the evaluation panel provided their advice and suggestions on the scientific programmes, and helped PIs to identify potential problems. They also commented on the research direction, research teams, expanding awareness of developments and scientific opportunities for IBCB as a whole.
 
As a nationally leading institute aiming to conduct the cutting-edge research in the human health related areas, and to become an internationally competitive, the IBCB will be greatly benefited from the International Evaluation. It is believed that the International Evaluation will be of great significance to the future development of IBCB.
