2010 SIBCB Annual Symposium

From Januray 6th – 8th, 2010, SIBCB held its Annual Symposium in Haiyatt Garden Hotel, Wujiang, Jiangsu Province. Among 302 participants are Prof. Ke Shuai (UCLA), Prof. Ming Lei (Umich), Prof. Junlin Guan (Umich), 42 PIs, graduate students, technical support staff, staff of Institute’s academic journals such as Cell Research, and administrative staff.
Dr. Anning Lin, director of SIBCB, celebrated the major achievements of SIBCB during the past year in his opening speech. Among them are:
* Establishment of International Advisory Board, with 7 internationally renowned scholars as members including Prof. Sidney Altman (Yale, USA), Prof. John Walker (Cambridge, UK), Prof Tony Hunter (Salk, USA), Prof. Melanie Cobb (UT Southwestern, USA), Prof. Michael Karin (UCSD, USA), Prof. Janet Rossant (UToronto), Prof. Roeland Nusse (Stanford, USA);
* Formation of five research clusters including 1) gene, RNA and epigenetic regulation, 2) protein science, 3) signal transduction, 4) cell and stem cell biology, 5) cancer and other diseases;
* Remarkable success in research grant application with a total amount of RMB 144 million and major grants such as 3 MOST Key Science Research Program grants, 21 NSFC grants, and 2 CAS grants; * Outstanding achievement in scientific research with 110 SCI original research articles (average impact factor 5.64) and multiple important discoveries published in high-profile journals such as Dev Cell, Nat Struc Mol Biol, Proc Natl Acad Sci USA, J Clin Oncol, and Gastroenterology;
* Exciting progress in scientific publishing with Cell Research’s impact factor reaching 8.151; * Encouraging progress in patent application and technology transfer with 12 authorized invention patents and 4 major technology transfer projects;
* Construction commencement of National Protein Science Facility-Shanghai (NPSF-Shanghai) and remarkable progress in research/technical team recruitment and training for Shanghai Center for Comprehensive Protein Science (SCPS);
* Continuing success in international and national academic exchange highlighted by the successful organization of 5 international research conferences;
* Accelerating progress in international and national research collaboration with the launch of a SIBCB- Xuhui District Central Hospital Cancer Research Center.
During the next one and a half days, special invited speaker Dr. Ke Shuai, 15 PIs, and 11 graduate students gave talks about their research, and informal discussions took place from poster stands to dinner tables.
Dr. Naihe Jing, deputy director of SIBCB, pointed out the Institute’s major tasks and directions for the year 2010 in his closing speech. Among them are:
* Application for the State Key Laboratory of Cell Biology;
* Evaluation of the State Key Laboratory of Molecular Biology;
* NPSF-Shanghai construction and SCPS recruitment and training;
* Implementation of major research projects such as CAS Strategic Leading Science and Technology Project “Stem Cell and Regenerative Medicine” and CAS Life Science Basic and Pioneering Research Project;
* Preparation for major research grant application.
The Symposium ended with a half-day visit to Tongli Old Town.
