The 1st SIBCB International Advisory Board Meeting & Mini-Symposium

The 1st SIBCB International Advisory Board (IAB) Meeting was held in SIBCB in the morning of October 10th, 2012. Five of the seven IAB members, namely Prof. Sidney Altman from Yale University, Prof. Tony Hunter from Salk Institute for Biological Studies, Prof. Michael Karin from University of California San Diego, Prof. Roel Nusse from Stanford University and Prof. Janet Rossant from University of Toronto, attended the meeting. Prof. Melanie Cobb from UT Southwestern Medical Center and Prof. John Walker from University of Cambridge were not able to attend. Attendees from SIBCB include SIBCB principal officers, CAS/CAE members and other faculty members.
In the general meeting session, Prof. Anning Lin, director of SIBCB, gave an institute work report that was divided by five parts including introduction, research highlights, recruitment-promotion-retention (RPR) program and opportunities & challenges. IAB members carefully listened to the report, and gave a lot of valuable advice on topics such as faculty recruitment, postdoctoral program and the National Center for Comprehensive Protein Science Shanghai.
During the following close-door discussion sessions, IAB members and SIBCB principal officers had in-depth discussion on the important issues of SIBCB institutional development, with a special focus on the RPR program. After the meeting, IAB members visited several core facilities in SIBCB.
The SIBCB IAB Mini-Symposium was held in the lecture hall of SIBCB Building B in the afternoon. IAB members gave scientific talks on RNA-based molecular medicine, protein post-translational modifications, inflammation and cancer, signal transduction and stem cell biology. The venue was packed with enthusiastic faculty members and students from SIBCB and several other research institutions in Shanghai, and the IAB member were impressed by the participants’ passion for cutting-edge science.
