The Shanghai Institute of Biochemistry and Cell Biology (SIBCB) held 2014 Symposium in SIBS auditorium in January 15-16, 2015. About 400 people attended the symposium.
Before the symposium program, all participants stand in silent tribute to Prof. Yue-ting Gong, the CAS member and the famous biochemist of SIBCB, who just passed away in Dec. 27, 2014. As an honored guest, Mr. Guoqing Fu, chief of basic research division of Sciences & Technology Commission, Shanghai Municipal Government, give a warm speech to hope SIBCB keep pay attention on the population and health problems in the local social and economic development, endeavor the cutting edge of the world life science. The invited speaker, Prof. Hongbing Su, vice president of Wu Han University and CAS member, gave an excellent academic speech. Also, Dr. Xiaobo Ren, chief of Division of Resources, Environment and Life Sciences in the Bureau of Major Research and Development Programs, CAS, Dr. Baoliang Song, dean of life sciences of Wu Han University, Dr. Yi Qu, vice dean of the Center Hospital of Shanghai Xuhui District, Dr. Xiangdong Fu, professor of UCSD, and Dr. Xiangyin Kong, deputy director of the Institute of Health Sciences, CAS, were invited to attend the symposium.
Dr. Xiao-long Liu, director of SIBCB, first give a brief review of SIBCB’s achievements in 2014 on academic organization, research team development, research progress and achievements, core facilities, domestic and international communication and collaboration, administrative system mechanism and culture development. In 2015, the Institute’s key work will concentrate on:
1) Implementing the ‘Pioneer Initiative’ plan
2) Promoting the “three centers” development
3) Put forward the 50 anniversary activity of the total synthesis of crystalline bovine insulin
4) Advancing Party Committee session work
5) Strengthening build of administrative ability
6) Carry forward the entire opening of Protein Sciences Equipment and Facilities
7) Condensing academic concerns.
At the end of the speech, Dr. Liu retrospect the 50 years ago, the Institute achieved total synthesis of crystalline bovine insulin. The forerunner’s spirit ‘Pragmatic, forge ahead in unity, not afraid of difficulties, and get on a new step’ inspire all SIBCB people.
The annual symposium presented 31 brilliant academic reports and 87 posters. For graduate students, ‘Wang Ying Lai’ Scholarship Awards, Best Oral Presentation Awards and Best Poster Awards were elected by ‘Wang Ying Lai Foundation’ committee and all symposium participants.
