Chinese Bulletin of Life Sciences, one of the key magazine of Chinese Science and Technology, published its latest issue (Vol 27, No. 6, 2015) as a special issue to mark the total synthesis of crystalline bovine insulin’s golden jubilee. Prefaced by the CAS President BAI Chunli, the issue collected a lot of memories of the scientists who experienced the project at that time.

The total synthesis of crystalline bovine insulin was started in 1958 and successfully accomplished in 1965. It was one of the major scientific advances over the last century.

SIBCB, a member Institute of Shanghai Institutes for Life Sciences now, was founded in 2000 through the merger of the former Shanghai Institute of Biochemistry of CAS and the Shanghai Institute of Cell Biology of CAS. Actually, the former Shanghai Institute of Biochemistry had made tremendously contribution to the total synthesis of crystalline bovine insulin and lots of scientists were dedicated in this great project, such as Former Director Wang Yinglai and Former Deputy Director Cao Tianqin of the Institute of Biochemistry.
